Love Thy Selfie: Three Steps to Embracing and Loving YOU!

By | Inspiration | No Comments

We are just days away from Valentine’s Day. And for some, this Celebration of love, friendship and romance is welcomes by cutesy messages, chocolates, teddy bears and candlelit dinners. But for some, Valentine’s Day is just another reminder that the desire for companionship, oneness and a relationship is a goal that hasn’t been achieved.

For all of use, it should be a time of year where we do a Self Check and really examine how much Love we are actually showing to ourselves. Now, I don’t mean the Selfie Love that we share on Instagram with the perfect lighting, make-up and smile. I mean the real Self Love. The love that extends beyond public perception and looks at your core.

If you want to go beyond showing outward expressions of Love for others and REALLY want to embrace some #SelfieLove, follow these tips

  1. Embrace Me Time- You spend so much time busy, going from one meeting to the next, From volunteering to networking, spending time with the family, brunch with friends and being a support to your those you mentor. But what about you? When is the last time you’ve spent significant (at least 12 consecutive hours awake) with just you? For many of us, we keep are schedules jammed packed so we don’t have to get alone. But guess what? If there’s any chance for you to truly Love and enjoy time with someone else, you have to enjoy time with YOU!
  2. List What Makes You Uniquely You- STOP Everything and take the next 5 minutes and make a list of ALL the things that are unique to you. From your eye and hair color to your love for Pythons, your comic book collection or your desire to make handmade greeting cards :) Whatever it is, add it to the list. It’s all of these Unique Qualities combine that make you. Unique, Beautiful, Creative YOU!
  3. Celebrate Your Quirks- Whether it’s the unconventional habit you have, your unique physical attribute or a hobby you absolutely LOVE, Celebrate it! There are so many components of you that are a unique combination that make up you! These are your differentiators. The things that set you apart. They deserve to not only be acknowledged (hope you created your list!) but also Celebrated.

Once you’ve spent some time with you, made your list and Celebrated your Uniqueness, you can now flip you phone to Selfie mode and snap a few pics that fully embrace and show you Loving Thy Selfie

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Step 5: Get Inspired! There’s inspiration Everywhere! From store windows to Pinterest and even Creative Blogs. Choose A Theme: Weave that theme into every aspect of your holiday planning. Think through subtle ways of including the theme into your event, into your collateral and even into your gift giving.

Step 6: Plan For Imperfection. We can plan, plan and plan in pursuit of Perfection, but as we all know, there are unexpected things that come up. Plan for Imperfection. We’ve found that out of the imperfections, the things we didn’t expect, that’s where we are required to get really Creative and really show ourselves what our Creative Genius is made of. Look for the imperfections and rather than stressing about them, use them as opportunities to get more creative.

Step 7: Celebrate and Be Present! Get in the spirit, Follow the Steps and then Celebrate. Celebrate the memories that arise as you listen to old holiday songs from Childhood. When attending holiday events, be fully present there. Celebrate the Creative Genius that you see in others through their events. Enjoy your Signature event. Sometimes when hosting we miss the chance to for fun. You’ve done all the work, when the event begins make a commitment to yourself to Celebrate and Be present at your Event. And finally Embrace the imperfections and let your Creative Genius Rise to The Top!

But wait, there’s so much to do. So many holiday parties to attend.  The ones you, your children and/ or your spouse are invited to AND the ones you hope to plan without a hitch. You’ve saved several images of Peppermint drinks, holiday cards and DIY decorations on Pinterest. You’ve drafted your guest list, or gift lists and maybe even made a lists of cool Must See activities or events to include this holiday season. Make this Holiday Season The Best one Yet for 2015 and for years to come. Ready to Know How? Below you’ll find A Happy Slappy Greeting’s Guide to Enjoying the Holiday Season: While Embracing Your Creative Genius.

Step 1: Make Your Holiday Play List: Yup! You have to ease yourself into the Holiday Season. Your brain has to get ready to enjoy all the excitement and anticipation of the Holiday with your favorite tunes. The most successful Holiday Play Lists includes a mix of Pop versions of classic tunes and The Donny Hathaway and Temptations classics that remind you of Christmas at Grandmom’s House. This Playlist is a must if you want to have the right environment to really tackle Holiday Happy with real joy and wonder.

Holiday Happy Recommendation: Make Your Playlist Right NOW! Have your Favs playing in the background while you continue reading this guide!

Step 2: Manage Your Events: With Mariah Carey “All I Want For Christmas” playing in the background it’s time to look at your Calendar. It’s easy to get overwhelmed with invites and obligations. Do not let the Holiday season Happen to you! Manage it by adding all of your events to a Fun Downloadable Holiday Calendar. Use your creative genius to color code the various events between the Must Attends, Might Attends and So Sorry I can’t Make It’s. Planning for where you want to be and need to be this holiday season will ensure that you manage the holiday and enjoy the fun!

Step 3: Set the Date For Your Signature Event. That’s Right, this is where it gets really fun. What’s your Holiday Happy event this year? Whether it’s a Cookie Exchange, Ugly Sweater Party or Kiddie New Years Bash, making sure you secure your date with enough time to incorporate all of your Creative Genius will ensure that you are Happy along with everyone else in your home this season.

Step 4: Collateral: We know for some of us, it’s not planning the holiday for ourself but instead for your Creative Business. Well, now is the time to plan how you will communicate with your audience this Holiday Season. Keep in mind, you have from this moment until Jan 5th to Communicate with your audience. You can choose to send Holiday cards (snail mail or electronically) wishing a Joyful Holiday Season, Happy Hanaukkah, Kwanzaa or Merry Christmas. But you can also avoid acknowledging any of the holidays and focus on New Years. An awesome trend is sending out Happy New Year cards. It’s a great way for your communication to standout from all the other “collateral” that’s being received this holiday.

Allow Me To Introduce Myself

By | Inside AHSG | No Comments

My Name is Aleea.. A Happy Slappy

Hi I’m Aleea. Aleea Slappy. I spent much of my childhood embarrassed by this last name. It wasn’t until I attended the Performing Arts High School in Philly that I started to embrace this name and the uniqueness that I brought to it.

I grew up in Philadelphia, raised with extremely strong influences by my Christian grandmother. I’ve been a Creative since a child. I began making handmade greeting cards for my older cousin when I was five years old and my love for beautifully designed cards with affirming messages remains strong today!

I started A Happy Slappy Greeting in 2010 as a hobby. I was working in Education Advocacy for a community based organization in Philadelphia. While I was doing work that I loved, I regularly felt unfulfilled with my life. I was spending time with friends, actively engaged in my church community, But knew there was something missing. After a conversation with a friend where I was venting my frustrations about life, she asked a simple yet wildly profound question.

“Aleea, what do you like to do?” she said. With no hesitation I said through my tears, “Make Greeting cards.” It was during that conversation that I realized that an important piece was missing from my life- Creativity.

Following that conversation, I promised my friend that I would dedicate two evenings a week after work to making greeting cards. Coming home on Tuesday and Thursday evenings to make my greeting cards became the highlight of my weeks. It brought me so much joy.

My evenings of card making quickly turned into my hobby. I began showing my designs to friends and coworkers and people began buying my greeting cards. Before I knew it, I had started a business.

Over the years I learned everything I could about entrepreneurship but still struggled to operate A Happy Slappy Greeting as a business. I knew what was needed to run a business, but I still maintained a hobbyist mentality. Over the years, A Happy Slappy Greeting evolved from the creative outlet that allowed me to relieve stress to the primary cause of my tension.

It’s difficult when your Passion becomes your problem. You must draw a line in the sand and make a hard decision. Will I run a business or maintain a Hobby?

In the past several years of embracing and running from A Happy Slappy Greeting, I’ve learned that many Creatives- Millennials and Women alike struggle with this. It’s a struggle between being a casual creative genius- someone who utilizes their creativity only when they feel inspired and the Consistent Creative, someone who knows that it requires discipline, planning and accountability to find real success from their passion.

This new found clarity has influenced the new direction for A Happy Slappy Greeting. Yes, we still offer the handmade greeting cards that I loved making years ago. But there’s more to u s. Our real mission is to help brilliant people (Like You!) strategize and receive the guidance needed to start profitable hobbies and grow successful creatively influenced businesses.

If you know that it’s time to do more than just work. If you find yourself where I was in 2010, wanting to do more with life and not knowing how to go after it, contact me. Creative Strategizing or small group Coaching may be for you.

Over the past few years I’ve developed an appetite for helping creative millennials and women live their dreams through businesses and side hustles. There is such a wealth of creativity that is generated when someone can take their idea and birth it into a business that supports them and their families.

I know that my life’s work is ensuring that others have the motivation, resources and accountability necessary to use their Creative Genius to impact generations, change the world around them and ultimately grow businesses that make a difference.
