My Name is Aleea.. A Happy Slappy
Hi I’m Aleea. Aleea Slappy. I spent much of my childhood embarrassed by this last name. It wasn’t until I attended the Performing Arts High School in Philly that I started to embrace this name and the uniqueness that I brought to it.
I grew up in Philadelphia, raised with extremely strong influences by my Christian grandmother. I’ve been a Creative since a child. I began making handmade greeting cards for my older cousin when I was five years old and my love for beautifully designed cards with affirming messages remains strong today!
I started A Happy Slappy Greeting in 2010 as a hobby. I was working in Education Advocacy for a community based organization in Philadelphia. While I was doing work that I loved, I regularly felt unfulfilled with my life. I was spending time with friends, actively engaged in my church community, But knew there was something missing. After a conversation with a friend where I was venting my frustrations about life, she asked a simple yet wildly profound question.
“Aleea, what do you like to do?” she said. With no hesitation I said through my tears, “Make Greeting cards.” It was during that conversation that I realized that an important piece was missing from my life- Creativity.
Following that conversation, I promised my friend that I would dedicate two evenings a week after work to making greeting cards. Coming home on Tuesday and Thursday evenings to make my greeting cards became the highlight of my weeks. It brought me so much joy.
My evenings of card making quickly turned into my hobby. I began showing my designs to friends and coworkers and people began buying my greeting cards. Before I knew it, I had started a business.
Over the years I learned everything I could about entrepreneurship but still struggled to operate A Happy Slappy Greeting as a business. I knew what was needed to run a business, but I still maintained a hobbyist mentality. Over the years, A Happy Slappy Greeting evolved from the creative outlet that allowed me to relieve stress to the primary cause of my tension.
It’s difficult when your Passion becomes your problem. You must draw a line in the sand and make a hard decision. Will I run a business or maintain a Hobby?
In the past several years of embracing and running from A Happy Slappy Greeting, I’ve learned that many Creatives- Millennials and Women alike struggle with this. It’s a struggle between being a casual creative genius- someone who utilizes their creativity only when they feel inspired and the Consistent Creative, someone who knows that it requires discipline, planning and accountability to find real success from their passion.
This new found clarity has influenced the new direction for A Happy Slappy Greeting. Yes, we still offer the handmade greeting cards that I loved making years ago. But there’s more to u s. Our real mission is to help brilliant people (Like You!) strategize and receive the guidance needed to start profitable hobbies and grow successful creatively influenced businesses.
